The overarching aim for Reading is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment. We are striving to ensure that every pupil sees themselves as a reader.

At Cottesmore Academy, we aim for our pupils to:

  • Develop a love of reading
  • See themselves and believe in themselves s as readers!
  • Read easily, fluently and with good understanding
  • Develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
  • Appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage
  • Acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
  • Use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas
  • Become competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.

The overarching aim for English at Cottesmore is to foster a love and passion for both reading and writing though widespread reading for enjoyment. We promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of spoken and written language.

We want every child at our school to feel and experience the magic and excitement that comes from reading books and to read widely and often, both for pleasure and with reason. We aim for our children to write with a real purpose and audience in mind so that they see themselves as real writers, who feel motivated to write, enjoy writing, and see that with their written work, they can have a real impact, whether that be writing a letter to persuade, a poem to perform or a story to be enjoyed.

In English, we want our children to become great readers and writers.

At Cottesmore Academy, we aim for our children to:

  • Read easily, fluently and with good understanding
  • Acquire a wide vocabulary
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of how grammar and punctuation is used both correctly and for impact in writing
  • Write clearly, accurately, and coherently, adapting language style for a range of contexts, purposes and audience, knowing what they need to include in order for it to be a successful piece of writing
  • Use discussion in order to learn, elaborating on and clearly explaining their understanding and ideas.
  • Develop competent speaking and listening skills
