Recognising a double.
The focus of Discover is to introduce the concept that two groups of equal quantity are called a double. Discuss the questions and the term double and ask children what they think it might mean. Encourage them to identify the double domino, and ask if they can see any other doubles in the picture.
The focus of Share is to model a strategy for identifying a double using five frames and counters. Putting the counters in five frames helps children to see whether the groups are equal. Children can count the counters in each five frame to see that there are two groups of 4 counters. The standard arrangement of 4 spots on the domino helps children to subitise. Reinforce that there are 2 equal groups of 4.
Sort dominoes into doubles and not doubles!
Use the five frame to prove that it is or is not a double.
